Why would you choose to be part of a religion? never been able to understand why anyone would tether themselves to a belief system. Unfathomable. It's kinda personal, so no obligations to share!

Interesting, just the other day I was talking about this with Euan. Well, not the other day, lets think a couple of months before the other day...*cough* anyway, I thought that if I wasn't raised and put in a catholic school, I would be atheiest. So truthfully it's just how I was raised.

Upbringing... suppose so, though at first I was bought up to be religious. I was kind of a rebel against it lol.

Psychological studies have indicated that humans seem to have an internal drive to connect to something greater than themselves.  In other words to seek out some form of Divinity in order to help them answer questions such as "Why am I here?", "What is the purpose of life?" or "What happens when I die?"

Personally I was raised as a Christian, but I became a confirmed atheist while serving in Vietnam.  I remained an atheist for nearly 15 years.  Then I experienced an intense and very personal interaction with what I can only say that for me was "Goddess".  I have been Wiccan now for 30 years.  I wouldn't say it is so much a matter of being tethered to a belief system as it is having found a belief system that mirrors what I already knew in my heart to be true.  During my time as a Wiccan I have had a number of personal interactions with what I can only describe as Gods and Goddesses.  It is because of these personal interactions and not because I belong to a religion that tells me what to believe, that I remain as a Wiccan.
